It looks like my Grandfather went to a really important football match. He was a big fan of Bromley FC; this has come up in conversation with my Mum, because she’s been following the Bromley team as they make great strides in League Two in the 2025-2026 season.
Mum says that her Dad, my Grandpa Les, went to most of Bromley’s games and she remembers him coming back after they won a trophy. She was about 13. Now, Bromley won the Amateur Cup in 1911 and 1938, but those games were played at West Norwood and Millwall respectively.
But the 1949 final - the one Mum remembers - was massive. Why? Because, it was the first Amateur Cup Final to be played at Wembley Stadium. A Romford fan has made a three minute film about it - See below. Bromley played and defeated, Romford, 1-0 on 23 April 1949. The Romford Recorder says that 93,000 watched the game. Among them was my Grandpa Les. Mum remembers seeing him on the bus at one point during the celebrations. Maybe he was such a big fan they let him on.
With so many fans paying to watch amateurs at Wembley, I suppose it shows that the appetite for football was huge after all the barren war years.
And my Grandad was there.
